Daniel Simmons, a Brigham Young-bound senior at American Fork High in Utah, was awarded the Gatorade National Boys Cross Country Player of the Year for the second straight season, becoming the first male competitor to secure back-to-back honors since two-time Foot Locker national champion Grant Fisher achieved the feat representing Grand Blanc High in Michigan in 2014-15. Fisher, a Nike professional athlete who now trains in Utah, presented Simmons with the award at school. Simmons joins Fisher and Lukas Verzbicas of Sandburg High in Illinois (2010-11) as the only repeat winners of the Gatorade National Boys Cross Country Player of the Year award. Utah now boasts more Gatorade national boys cross country winners than any other state, with Simmons following Casey Clinger of American Fork in 2017 and Aidan Troutner from Timpview High in 2018. Simmons will follow both Clinger and Troutner by attending BYU.
